Ms. Herwitz,
I am a writer for The Scarlet, Clark University's student newspaper. I am doing a series of articles on the dying trees on campus (most recently, we just chopped down a spectacular European Copper Beech tree). I read that you taught at Clark and thought this subject would interest you. There are several trees in danger of dying soon. I also want to focus on replanting. Could I speak with you at your earliest convenience? My email is lpescaro@clarku.edu.
Thank you,
Lynn Marie Pescaro (Class of 2017)

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your interest in Elm Park. There are a few sources you can check, either at the Worcester Public Library or the Worcester Historical Museum: There's a document by Rudy J. Favretti, "History of Elm Park, Worcester, Masssachusetts (Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Environmental Management, 1985), that gives a good accounting. You can also check Worcester City Documents for written reports by Edward Winslow Lincoln about the building of the park. Some of those reports include pictures. The Worcester Historical Museum also has a great library of images of the city, including Elm Park.

A great resource is the Olmsted Archives in Brookline, Mass., http://www.nps.gov/frla/olmstedarchives.htm, part of the National Parks Service system. They house comprehensive records of all of the Olmsted Firm's projects. And of course, you'll find a more detailed history of the park in my book!

I hope this helps. Good luck with your research.

Hi Evelyn,
Interesting piece. Is there any source or sources to see the evolution of the park over time, and in particular before and after pictures depicting the changes made by the Olmsted Firm?

Hi Nathan,

That sounds like a great project. Elm Park can certainly use your help! I would start with the Central Mass Regional Environmental Council, www.recworcester.org. They have done a lot of work with park and neighborhood clean-ups for Earth Day over the years. Also be sure to contact the City of Worcester Department of Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries, www.worcesterma.gov/dpw/parks-rec. Good luck and thanks for caring to help improve our city's parks!

Hello, I am a student at W.P.I., I am attending an Environmental planning class. We are required to work on a project addressing a problem. We decided to look at Elm Park, and noticed that there is a lot of trash and things that could be picked up and fixed at the park. We were wondering if you would be able to help us out. We are looking for sources and things like that. If you can be of any help to us it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Nathan Jaworski -WPI-Civil Engineer
